Hi there.

Music critics and historians will tell you that Bossa Nova's greatest recording - the Getz/Gilberto album - turned 50 in March 2013. Heck, even the record label touted that date. But for most of us, the day that album became part of our music collection.  I'll share the complete story below, with more during the show.

The folks in our ‘Don’t Just Sit There, Do Something’ department have asked me to remind you these timely tips to help you enjoy the music even more:

This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every three hours beginning at 6am Central Time daily.

Jazz music in Brazil enjoys the same long and rich tradition as it has here in the US – perhaps even more so, due to the infusion of the jazz style in many forms of Brazilian song: There’s Choro and MPB, and there’s no denying the jazzy nature of Bossa Nova (there are still Brazilian music critics who steadfastly maintain that Bossa Nova is not really Brazilian at all – that it roots are in American jazz!). But no matter what musical path you wish to explore, it’s easy to understand the generational trail left for us to follow.

And while we’ll spend the next four weeks exploring hundreds of songs and musicians who carry the banner for our 'Rendezvous In Rio' theme, only one album could qualify to be the first featured: ‘Getz/Gilberto’

Simply put, this timeless recording is the touchstone for Bossa Nova’s worldwide success and the Brazilian sound’s translation into a bona fide jazz idiom. The music is irresistibly romantic, the production and musicianship sublime.

It's the 5th decade of its recording, release and debut of Getz/Gilberto on Billboard's Pop chart, and few pop albums of any kind have matched its success. Once completed the project sat on producer Creed Taylor’s desk for nearly a year but once released, ‘Getz/Gilberto’ went on to nominations for seven Grammies in 1964, coming away with four awards (for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Instrumental Jazz Performance – Small Group, and Best Engineered Record – non classical) edging out both Barbra Streisand and the Beatles. The album entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ single followed a year later.

Sales success? ‘Getz/Gilberto’ went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #2 as a certified million selling album, and it stayed there for 96 weeks until finally giving way to the Beatles and the musical sea change that followed.  In fact, eight songs never sounded so…

While you think of the best words to finish that sentence, why not join me as we take Brazilian music back to its American roots? The ‘Getz/Gilberto’ album is a classic recording around the world – even in Rio de Janeiro.

I hope you'll enjoy the show!
