Any trip to Rio...

… has to include a lunch with Marcos Ariel. Truth be told, some of my most memorable meals in the Zona Sul include the easy-going keyboardist. Last time, he shared the thought of a permanent move here, but those plans are on hold, for now. So be sure to reacquaint yourself with one of Brazil’s most life-loving and gregarious musical personalities, below. Always fun with Marcos and his music.

Sunday’s ‘Brazilian Brunch’ on The Sounds of Brazil! The weekend will be here before you know it, so plan to relax and unwind with me for awhile. Sundays only: three consecutive hours beginning at 9 am CT (Chicago time) and then again at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm CT.

Requests pay off because you get to hear your name and song on The Sounds of Brazil when I play yours. Request a Marcos Ariel song (or one of your own favs), or an artist or style when you stop by the Brazil Club Lounge.

This week’s show:

 My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every day at 7am, 3pm, 6pm and midnight Central Time daily.

In Rio, Marcos Ariel is known as a ‘Carioca da Gema’ (no, not that famous bar in Lapa; that’s a different story...). He’s a true carioca, not just by birth but most importantly because of his spirit and zest for life. And as so many of his longtime fans know, these qualities carry over into his music.

Marcos Ariel had some early success as a pianist and keyboard player playing the Rio club circuit but I think it’s fair to say that his pathway to success began with ‘Zil’.

Released by Polygram/Verve here in the US in 1988 (but ironically never released in Brazil) ‘Zil’ brought together several young stars in the making, including Zé Renato, Claudio Nucci, Ricardo Silveira, Zé Nogueira, Jurim Moreira and João Batista. And while the recoding itself was a bit uneven, the album is one of a handful from that period which nurtured a new style of Brazilian instrumental music. It was also an early pairing for Ariel and Silveira, whose piano and guitar sound remains a calling card for contemporary Brazilian jazz.

Most importantly, it brought Ariel’s name to new fans in America - many who were discovering their own jazz revolution - and Ariel’s music fit the style perfectly with a beautiful piano balled ‘The Angles I Know’.

By the 90s, Marcos Ariel had developed a bi-coastal career (Rio de Janeiro/Los Angeles), releasing a series of albums that made his popularity even stronger in both Brazil and the U.S.

‘Terra do Índio’ was first, and more releases followed; ‘Rhapsody in Rio,’ ‘Hand Dance,’ ‘Soul Song’ and then ‘My Only Passion,’ ‘Magic Eyes’ and ‘Four Friends’.

Always quick with a smile and a story or two, Marcos Ariel’s warm smile and his easy-going nature has picked up a new fan base – and a new hobby. It turns out that he’s a quite a gourmet when it comes to the art of pizza. In fact, his hand-tossed pizza parties are becoming very popular in the Zona Sul these days.

Just think: great pizza and Brazilian jazz. What could be better?

Happy Listening,

Scott Adams
